The Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency (PVWMA) is the recently appointed Groundwater Sustainability Agency under California’s new sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Researchers at the T2GS California site were given a tour of one of their proposed water supply projects that, if implemented, would utilize a seasonal lake for irrigation water storage and build a pipeline to bring its water to agricultural constituents. Proposed as a way to avoid increasing depletion of the groundwater aquifer, the project would provide approximately 2,400 acre feet of water per year. While the project has its beneficiaries and backers, it has been and continues to be contested by local residents whose adjacent property and riparian rights may be impacted by the development. In addition, the project would mean that lake water would no longer be pumped into Monterey Bay in the summer for seasonal crops.
